Target Sports
The target sports have a greater emphasis on vision and vision performance then any other sports. Simply put - you can't shoot what you can't see. As an optometrist and a clay target shooter I am interested in how we utilize and train our visual system to achieve improved performance.
Optometry is perfectly placed to analyse and enhance the components that makes up vision;
- Visual acuity [how small the target can be that the human eye can see it]
- Contrast sensitivity [how well we can see a target compared to its background]
- Visual fields [how well we detect targets across our field of vision and how this allows us to detect and track targets]
- Binocular vision [how our eyes work together to give us accurate 'single' vision and depth perception]
- Eye Muscles [how eye movements help track targets]
- Colour vision [the incidence of colour deficiency within the population and ways to manage this]
- Tear film/dry eye [the importance of the ocular surface for clear vision]
During a sports vision consultation each of these aspects are tested.
During the sports vision consultation the following areas of sports vision are covered;
- The importance of having our best vision through spectacles and contact lenses
- Choosing correct tints for improving contrast and reducing glare symptoms but still allowing enough light through to allow our eyes to perform at their best
- Utilizing the more sensitive parts of our visual field for fast target acquisition and speed of tracking
- Eye exercises to improve tracking accuracy and to warm up our eyes before competition
- Eye dominance issues
- How to deal with colour deficiency [colour blindness].
Getting the most out of our vision has a direct correlation with improved scores on the range.
Tailored sports optometry consultations are available where Luke Higgins can visit your local club/sports ground to provide on the spot optometry advice tailored to you personally while you are in your natural sporting environment. If interested in this option – please contact with your enquiry.
